A Sanctuary for Kabuki

Kabuki is a traditional Japanese performing art that has been recognized in Japan as an Intangible Cultural Property and by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage. Since it was built in 1889 in the area of Tokyo called “Kobikicho,” while overcoming many disasters, for long years has presented performances of traditional theatre that always incorporate the spirit of the times.

The fifth building of Kabukiza takes as its guiding concept the idea of “combining the passing on of tradition and new creation.” The building preserves the feeling of the previous buildings, both inside and out, but incorporates the latest in stage technology to be the only theatre in the world specializing in kabuki that emphasizes ease of use and functionality.
By incorporating the Kabukiza Gallery and Rooftop Garden, Kabukiza uses kabuki as the core  to show Japan’s traditional culture to the world.

Format of Performances

Kabukiza exclusively performs kabuki with a new program every month. Each month’s program is usually divided into a matinee and evening program, but sometimes there are three different programs.
The matinee usually begins at 11 and the evening program at 16:30, although occasionally there are some changes.
One program usually contains three or four separate plays and including intermission time, lasts for about 4 hours. (When there are three programs, the running time of one program is shorter.)

■ Single Act Tickets

It is possible to buy tickets for just one section of a program. This is perfect for people watching kabuki for the first time. The seats for these tickets are on the 4th floor.
